Chapter 2: Four Words on the Back of a Photograph

Mr.
Delgado slid a small key across the desk without a word.
My hands were shaking as I fit it into the lock.
The box opened with a soft click.
Inside was a folded letter, a USB drive, and a photograph I had never seen before — Frank, much younger, standing beside a woman I didn't recognize.
On the back, in Frank's handwriting, were four words.
*She knew the truth.*
I looked up at Mr.
Delgado.
"Who is she?"
He folded his hands on the desk.
"That's explained in the letter.
But Patricia, I need to warn you — Brad and Stephanie have already called this office twice this week asking about the estate."
My stomach dropped.
"They told me," he continued carefully, "that they intend to contest the will.
They're claiming Frank was not of sound mind when he made his final changes."
I stared at him.
"What final changes?"
He paused.
"He updated everything fourteen months ago.
Quietly.
Without telling them."
Before he could say another word, his phone rang.
He glanced at the screen and his expression shifted.
"I'm sorry," he said.
"I have to take this.
It's Brad."
