Chapter 2: The Boy With Evidence

Part 2 ⬇️
I stood at the window watching Jake knock on Gary's door.
My stomach was tight.
He's twelve.
What could he possibly say that I hadn't already tried?
Gary answered, and I could see from his body language he was already annoyed.
Then Jake held something up.
I couldn't make out what it was from where I stood.
But Gary's expression changed instantly.
The smirk disappeared.
I stepped outside.
"…took this the morning it happened," Jake was saying.
"The timestamp is right there.
You can see the bike.
You can see your truck.
And you can see exactly what happened."
Gary's face had gone pale.
"That's — that doesn't prove anything," he said.
But his voice had lost its confidence.
"I also looked up the local ordinance," Jake said calmly.
"A bike parked on private property isn't the driver's right-of-way.
I wrote it down if you want to read it."
He pulled out a folded piece of paper from his back pocket.
Gary stared at him.
Then he looked at me.
Then back at Jake.
"How much was the bike?" he said quietly.
I couldn't speak.
My twelve-year-old had just done in three minutes what I couldn't do in two weeks.
But then Gary said something else.
Something low, almost under his breath, that wiped the relief right off my face.
