Chapter 2: Happy Birthday, Ryan

Ryan tore the wrapping off like a child on Christmas morning.
His friends crowded around, phones out, ready to film.
Inside the box was a thick manila envelope.
Ryan's smile flickered.
"What's this?"
"Open it," Barbara said sweetly.
He pulled out a stack of papers.
His face went pale.
"Those," Barbara said, loud enough for everyone to hear, "are your credit card statements.
All fourteen months of them.
I had a financial advisor pull everything together."
Someone in the crowd let out a low whistle.
"I also included a copy of the message you sent my personal assistant last Tuesday," she continued.
"The one where you asked him how long it would take to access a widow's estate if you married her quickly."
Ryan's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
"I'm not your girlfriend," Barbara said, still smiling.
"I'm your mother's oldest friend.
And I think every person here deserved to know exactly who they were celebrating today."
She picked up her bag calmly.
"Happy birthday, Ryan."
The yard was completely silent.
I stepped out from behind the fence.
Ryan saw me and went completely still.
Then one of his friends said something nobody expected — and Ryan's whole face changed.
