Chapter 2: The Phone on the Table

Part 2 ⬇️
Nobody moved.
The kitchen felt smaller than it ever had.
My dad pulled out a chair and sat down.
Not because he was tired.
Because he was done standing while she stalled.
"Felicia.
Fifty thousand dollars doesn't disappear.
Start talking."
She finally turned from the window.
"I was going to tell you."
"When?"
She didn't answer.
Marcus set the car keys on the counter slowly.
"Mom.
I knew about the car.
You told me it was from your savings." His voice was flat.
"What savings are you talking about?"
"I handled it," she said.
"You handled what?" my dad asked.
"Because from where I'm sitting, you took ninety thousand dollars that belonged to my daughter and you're standing here telling me you handled it."
That was when I noticed something.
Felicia kept glancing at her phone on the counter.
Not picking it up.
Just checking it.
Like she was waiting for a message.
Or afraid one was coming.
Marcus noticed too.
He reached over and picked it up before she could stop him.
She grabbed for it.
"That's private—"
"Mom." He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
He put the phone down on the table and stepped back.
"There's a second account," he said quietly.
"And there's someone else."
