Chapter 2: The Folder on the Table

Everyone in that room turned to look at Richard.
Mark laughed — short, dismissive.
"I don't know what you think you're doing, but this is a private matter."
"No," Richard said quietly.
"It stopped being private the moment you humiliated my best employee in front of her entire team."
He reached into his bag and pulled out a folder.
Thick.
Tabbed.
Mark's smile flickered.
"Jennifer," Richard said, not looking away from Mark, "did you know your husband came to see me three weeks ago?
Alone.
Without telling you."
I couldn't speak.
"He asked me," Richard continued, opening the folder, "to pass her over for the promotion.
Said a senior partner position would make her too independent.
Those were his exact words."
Someone at the table made a sharp sound.
I think it was me.
Mark's face had gone very still.
"I kept the email," Richard said.
"And the voicemail.
And the letter he sent to two of our board members making the same request."
He slid the folder across the table toward me.
My hands were shaking as I reached for it.
That was when Mark's phone rang — loud, cutting through the silence.
He looked down at the screen and something crossed his face that I had never seen before.
Fear.
