Chapter 2: The Notebook on the Counter

I called Max.
Not to complain.
Not to cry.
I just put the phone on speaker and let him listen.
Anna had come back downstairs by then, still furious, already talking.
"Your wife threw my friends out of her house like they were strangers.
I was only trying to help and she humiliated me."
Max was quiet for a moment.
"Mom.
Those were strangers.
To Helen and to the baby."
"They're my friends—"
"Mom.
Stop."
His voice was calm.
That made it worse for her.
I hadn't said a single word.
I didn't need to.
Then Max said something that made Anna go completely still.
"I already spoke to the pediatrician this morning, Mom.
About everything Helen told me this week."
Anna's face changed.
"What does that mean?
What did she tell you?"
"Enough.
I'm coming home early."
She turned to me the moment the call ended.
Something in her expression had shifted — not anger anymore.
Something closer to fear.
"What exactly did you tell him?"
I looked at her and said nothing.
That's when she noticed the small notebook on the kitchen counter.
The one I'd been writing in every day since she arrived.
Her voice dropped to almost a whisper.
"Helen…
how much did you write down?"

What was in that notebook — and what did the pediatrician tell Max?
The full story is more emotional than you'd expect.
