Chapter 2: Three Names in Handwriting I Still Knew

Part 2 β continued from the comments π
My hands were shaking as I stepped closer.
Each box had a name on it.
Tommy.
Ray.
Nick.
Written in handwriting I hadn't seen in decades but recognized immediately.
I sat down on that old bench and opened the first one.
Inside Tommy's box was a photograph β the four of us at seventeen, laughing at the lake's edge.
Underneath it, a folded letter.
I opened it slowly.
*"Harold.
I made it back.
Just not the way I planned."*
I didn't understand what that meant.
Not yet.
Ray's box held a small cassette tape, an old one, the kind we used back in the seventies.
Taped to it was a note in Ray's handwriting: *"Play this last."*
Nick's box was heavier.
Inside was a leather journal, worn at the corners, filled with entries going back years.
The last page was dated three weeks ago.
I was still holding it when I heard footsteps on the gravel path behind me.
I turned around.
A woman I had never seen before was walking toward me.
She looked to be in her late fifties, and she was crying before she even reached me.
"You must be Harold," she said.
"I've been waiting a long time to find you."
