Chapter 2: The Click Behind the Door

Tyler came into the kitchen holding two glasses and stopped the moment he saw me standing alone at the basement door, key in my hand.

"Mom?

Where's Marcus?"

"Downstairs," I said.

"Tyler, I need you to listen to me very carefully."

"What did you do?" His voice dropped.

"Mom, what did you DO?"

"That young man," I said, keeping my voice low, "I've seen his face before.

Not from college.

Not from anywhere you'd know about."

Tyler set the glasses down hard.

"You're not making sense."

"Three years ago," I said, "your cousin Lily went missing for four days.

Do you remember that?"

He stared at me.

"The police showed us photos.

People they were looking at." My hands were shaking now.

"Tyler, I never forgot that face.

I never forgot it because I prayed every night I would never see it again."

From behind the basement door, Marcus's voice came through, calm and quiet.

"Mrs.

Diane," he said.

"I think there's been a misunderstanding."

That voice.

That same careful, practiced calm.

Tyler looked at the door.

Then at me.

His face had gone completely white.

My phone was already in my hand when we heard the sound from downstairs — not a knock, not a shout.

Just silence.

And then a single soft click.
