Chapter 2: I Was Wondering When You'd Finally Find It

I picked it up with shaking hands.

It was a small black listening device.

Tiny.

Professional-looking.

The kind you'd see in a spy movie, not in your own living room.

I sat on the floor for a long time, staring at it.

Every argument.

Every private conversation.

Every whispered word I thought was only mine — she had heard all of it.

I called my husband in from the other room.

"What is this?" I held it out to him.

He looked at it.

Then he looked at me.

And he didn't look surprised.

"Where did you find that?" he asked.

His voice was too calm.

"Inside your mother's clock," I said.

"The one she gave me the day after our wedding."

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he said, "Christine, I can explain."

"Explain what?" I asked.

"That your mother has been listening to everything I say in my own home?

Or that you already knew?"

He didn't answer.

That silence told me everything.

I grabbed my phone and called his mother directly.

She picked up on the second ring.

Before I could say a single word, she said, "I was wondering when you'd finally find it."
