Chapter 2: The Transfer That Changed Everything

Three days later, my phone lit up.

Karla.

I let it ring.

She called four more times before she sent a text: *"The payment didn't go through.

My lender is saying I'm late.

What did you do?"*

I set my phone face-down on the bed and listened to Sophia humming to herself in the corner.

The next morning, my mother called.

"Laura.

Whatever point you're trying to make, you've made it.

Come home."

"I am home, Mom."

Silence.

Then her voice dropped.

"Don't be dramatic.

Karla needs that transfer.

You know she can't cover it herself right now."

*Right now.* As if it had only been a temporary situation.

As if four years meant nothing.

"I cancelled it," I said.

"Permanently."

She hung up.

That afternoon, a notification came through from my lawyer.

The formal letter I had authorized had been sent — addressed to both my parents, at the apartment on Delmore Street.

The letter informed them that the registered legal owner of the property intended to review the current occupancy arrangement.

My father called at 9 p.m.

His voice was different.

Quieter.

"Laura…

where did you find that deed?"

I didn't answer.

"Your mother didn't know I had transferred it.

She still doesn't fully understand what it means."

"She will," I said.

"Soon."

He went silent for a long moment.

Then: "There's something else in those documents, Laura.

Something we never told you."

My hand tightened around the phone.

What secret has Arthur been hiding — and why did he transfer that apartment into Laura's name in the first place?

The full truth is more shocking than anyone expected.
