Chapter 2: The Two Phone Calls

Part 2 ⬇️

I set my plate on the counter and stood there for a moment, completely still.

Then I picked up my phone and made two calls.

The first was to my husband.

He already knew.

He'd been watching from the doorway the whole time, and when I looked up, he gave me one small nod.

The second call was to a locksmith.

I walked back into the dining room and smiled at everyone like nothing had happened.

"Dessert's ready," I said.

My mother looked almost disappointed.

James refilled his glass.

Mason was already back on the sofa with his feet up.

Nobody mentioned the TV.

Not once.

After dessert, I stood at the front door and held it open.

"Thank you all for coming," I said.

"Drive safe."

My mother stopped in the doorway.

"So that's it?

You're not going to say sorry to Mason?"

"No," I said.

"I'm not."

Her face went tight.

"Then don't expect us back."

"I won't," I said.

And I closed the door.

James texted twenty minutes later.

*Mom's really upset.

You need to fix this.*

I didn't reply.

But then my husband came into the kitchen holding his own phone, and the look on his face stopped me cold.

"You need to see what James just sent to your father," he said quietly.

"He's been lying to them for years.

About all of it."
