Chapter 2: The Woman at the Door

I read the first line again, out loud.

"*Your mother has finally forced the truth into the light.*"

The room was so quiet I could hear Lily's small, shuddering breaths against Michael's chest.

I kept reading.

Charles's handwriting was steady.

Careful.

Like a man who had written this letter knowing exactly what it would one day cost.

*I raised you as my son because I loved you.

That was never a lie.

But there are things Diane buried that you deserve to know.

Jonathan Reed was her first husband.

She was already carrying you when she married me.

I agreed to raise you as a Bennett.

What I did not agree to was what she did with that agreement.*

Michael's hand gripped my shoulder.

I turned the page.

*Jonathan Reed died before you were born.

But he had a daughter from a previous relationship.

Her name is Carol.

She is your half-sister.

And under the original trust, she has a legal claim to Bennett Group that your mother has spent thirty years trying to erase.*

The silence in the room cracked.

Someone near the back whispered a name.

*Carol.*

I looked up.

Diane had gone completely still.

And then, near the far entrance of the atrium, a woman stepped forward from the crowd.

She was around sixty.

Silver-haired.

Calm.

She looked directly at Michael.

"I think," she said quietly, "that it's time we spoke."

Michael stared at her.

"Who are you?"

The woman's eyes moved briefly to Diane.

Diane made a sound I had never heard from her before.

Something between a gasp and a plea.

The woman looked back at Michael.

"My name is Carol Reed."

What Carol revealed next — and what Diane had done to silence her for thirty years — is more shocking than anything in that room.
