Chapter 2: The Wrong First Question

Part 2 ⬇️
David's first words were: "My mother just called me.
What the hell is wrong with you?"
Not *how is Chloe*.
Not *is she hurt*.
Not even *what happened*.
My hand tightened around the phone.
"Your mother hit our daughter, David.
Chloe's nose was bl00ding.
There are fingerprints on her face."
Silence.
Then: "Mom said Chloe was being difficult and things got out of hand.
She didn't mean to hurt her."
*Didn't mean to.*
"She sl@pped a two-year-old hard enough to leave marks.
That is not *out of hand*.
That is @ssault."
"Rachel, you cancelled her insurance.
Her surgery—"
"Is not my responsibility anymore."
He exhaled sharply.
"She has nowhere else to go."
"Then figure it out," I said.
"Because she is not sleeping under the same roof as my daughter tonight."
Another silence.
Longer this time.
When David finally spoke again, his voice had dropped to something quieter.
Something careful.
"Rachel…
there's something I should have told you a long time ago about my mother.
About why she is the way she is with Chloe specifically."
My stomach went cold.
"What are you talking about?"
He didn't answer right away.
And in that pause, I heard Margaret's voice drifting through the bedroom door — not sobbing anymore.
She was on *her* phone.
Calm.
Almost whispering.
Saying a name I had never heard before.
