Chapter 2: The Plan in the Filing Cabinet

“Don’t touch anything else,” the attorney said.
“Photograph every page, then send the pictures to me.”
My hands trembled as I laid the documents across David’s desk.
She called back five minutes later.
“This signature appears to have been copied from another document,” she said.
“But that isn’t the worst part.”
“What could be worse?”
“The guardianship plan was prepared three years ago—two weeks after Mia’s third birthday.”
My stomach tightened.
“Why would David plan to take my daughter from me?”
“There’s more,” she said.
“The witness listed here is Dana.”
I stared at the page.
Dana hadn’t merely defended Eleanor.
She had helped prepare this.
Then I noticed another document beneath the folder.
It was a letter describing me as “unstable, irrational, and unsafe around my child.”
A doctor’s name appeared at the bottom.
“I’ve never met this doctor,” I whispered.
“Take a picture,” the attorney said.
“Right now.”
Before I could lift my phone, the front door opened downstairs.
“David is supposed to be at work.”
“Leave the papers and get out,” she ordered.
Footsteps crossed the hall.
Then David called my name.
He wasn’t alone.
Eleanor’s voice followed from the stairs.
“Check the filing cabinet,” she said.
“If she found the papers, we move Mia today.”
