Chapter 2: The Name on the Document

My father-in-law didn't look at his wife.
He didn't look at his son.
He looked at me.
"Emily," he said quietly.
"Sit down.
Please."
My mother-in-law's voice cracked.
"Harold.
What is this?"
He ignored her.
He slid the top document across the table toward me.
My name was on it.
My name — not my husband's.
Not the family's.
Mine.
"I had this drawn up six months ago," Harold said.
"After the last time."
I looked up.
"The last time?"
He nodded slowly.
"I saw what she did to you at Thanksgiving.
You didn't know I was in the hallway."
The room felt like it stopped.
My husband pushed back his chair.
"Dad, you had no right—"
"I had every right." Harold's voice didn't rise.
It didn't need to.
"This house was left to me by my father.
I paid off every debt on it.
Including yours."
The silence that followed was different from before.
Heavier.
My mother-in-law turned to her son.
Something passed between them — fast, guilty, desperate.
And that was when I noticed it.
The second document still inside the envelope.
Harold hadn't shown it to anyone yet.
He was watching me.
Waiting to see if I already knew what it said.
I didn't.
But I was starting to understand why he had come in at that exact moment.
