Chapter 2: The Man She Recognized

His name was Gerald.
And from the look on Linda's face, she knew exactly who he was.
Tristan leaned close to me.
"Who is that?"
"My grandfather," I said.
"He owns this estate."
Linda's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Gerald walked straight past her without a word.
He kissed my cheek, shook Tristan's hand, and smiled at the guests like none of this was unusual.
Because for him, it wasn't.
Linda grabbed my arm.
"You never told us your family had money."
I looked at her hand on my arm, then back at her face.
"You never asked."
She let go.
But then Gerald turned around.
"Linda," he said quietly.
"It's been a long time."
The color drained from her face.
Tristan stared at his mother.
"You two know each other?"
She didn't answer.
Gerald reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.
"I think it's time she explained a few things." He held it out — not to Linda.
To Tristan.
"Starting with why she tried to stop this wedding six months ago.
Before any of you knew about it."
Tristan took the envelope.
Linda stepped forward.
"Don't open that."
Her voice was shaking.
