Chapter 2: The Name on the Deed

Part 2 β continued below π

Daniel arrived in eight minutes.
I heard the doorbell from upstairs and forced myself down the staircase one step at a time, blanket still wrapped around my shoulders, fever burning through me.
Diane got to the door first.
"Who are you?" she demanded.
"Daniel Price.
I'm Ava's attorney."
The word *attorney* landed like a stone.
Diane turned and looked up at me on the stairs with an expression I had never seen on her face before.
Not anger.
Something closer to alarm.
"You called a lawyer?" she said.
"Over a disagreement about dinner?"
"Over my property," I said.
I made it to the bottom step and held out my hand.
Daniel placed a folder in it without a word.
I opened it and set the deed on the hallway table so Diane could see exactly whose name was printed at the top.
She stared at it for a long moment.
Then her phone rang.
She glanced at the screen, and something shifted in her face.
She silenced it without answering.
"Diane," I said quietly.
"Was that Ethan?"
She didn't answer.
But her hand was trembling.
Daniel leaned toward me and said in a low voice, "Ava, there's something else in that file you need to see.
Something I found this morning that I didn't want to tell you over the phone."
