Chapter 2: The First Baby

Ryan's eyes went straight to that drawer.

He moved in front of it — not to open it.

To block it.

"Ryan." My voice was shaking.

"What did she do before?"

"This isn't the time, Sarah."

"Our son has milk in his eyes and you're protecting that drawer — so yes, it is the time."

Linda had stopped crying.

She was watching Ryan now, very still, like she was waiting to see what he would say.

That scared me more than anything.

"She's done something to a baby before, hasn't she?" I said.

"That's what this is."

"Sarah, stop—"

"Tell me I'm wrong."

He couldn't.

I looked at Linda.

Her face was unreadable.

No guilt.

No fear.

Just waiting.

I pressed Noah against my chest and walked to the drawer.

Ryan grabbed my arm.

"Don't."

"Let go of me."

"Sarah, please—"

I pulled free and yanked the handle.

Locked.

I turned back to Ryan.

"Give me the key."

The room went completely silent.

Then Linda spoke — quietly, almost gently.

"Ryan," she said.

"Tell her about the first baby."

Ryan's face went white.

I felt the floor shift under me.

"The first baby?" I whispered.

"Ryan…

what first baby?"

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.
