Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

Grant stood there dripping, his shirt soaked through, his mouth hanging open.
Rosalind screamed.
"You crazy woman!
How dare you!"
"I dare," I said quietly, "because I'm done."
I picked up my handbag from the chair.
My hands were steady.
My face was still stinging, but I didn't touch it.
"Where do you think you're going?" Grant grabbed the doorframe, blocking my way.
"You walk out that door and this marriage is finished."
"It finished the moment you raised your hand."
Rosalind stepped forward, pointing her finger in my face.
"You came into this house with nothing.
You are nothing.
You'll leave with nothing."
I looked at her for a long moment.
"Is that what you believe?"
I reached into my bag and placed a single business card on the dresser.
White.
Embossed.
The Voss Capital logo in the corner.
Rosalind picked it up.
Her expression shifted.
Something behind her eyes flickered — confusion first, then something closer to fear.
"What is this?"
Before I could answer, Grant's phone lit up on the nightstand.
He glanced at the screen and went completely still.
The name on the screen was one I recognized immediately.
It was someone who should not have been calling him.
Not tonight.
Not ever.
