The sale completed in eleven days.
I said nothing.
I went to work, cooked dinner, drove Madison to her appointments.
I smiled when Diane rearranged my cupboards for the third time.
I let Julian believe his "Watch your mouth" had worked.
On the twelfth day, a notification appeared on his phone while he was in the shower.
He'd left it on the kitchen counter.
I didn't touch it.
I didn't need to.
My attorney had already confirmed the transfer.
That evening Julian came downstairs with a strange look on his face.
"Did you get a letter from a property firm?"
"Probably junk mail," I said.
He stared at me.
"It has our address on it."
"Then open it."
He did.
The color left his face so fast that Diane looked up from the sofa.
"What is it?" she asked.
Julian's hand was shaking.
"The house," he said.
"It's been sold."
Diane stood.
"What do you mean sold?
You can't sell a house without—"
"He couldn't," I said quietly.
"I could."
The room went completely still.
Madison looked at Diane.
Diane looked at Julian.
Julian looked at me like he was seeing me for the first time.
Then Diane said the one thing that told me everything I had never been able to prove.
"She planned this.
Julian, I told you years ago — I told you what she was."
