Chapter 2: The Documents in the Car

I leaned down and spoke quietly, just loud enough for the two guests closest to her to hear.
"Evelyn, I just wanted to let you know — I called your accountant.
And your attorney.
Both of them confirmed what Daniel found last month."
Her smile froze.
"I don't know what you think you're—"
"The estate," I said softly.
"Daniel is the sole heir.
Not the foundation.
Not the trust you set up without telling him.
Him."
One of her guests shifted uncomfortably in her seat.
Evelyn's hand tightened around her wine glass.
"You have no idea what you're talking about," she whispered.
"I have the documents in my car," I said.
"Would you like me to bring them in?
I'm sure your guests would find it very interesting."
The color drained from her face completely.
Then, from across the room, one of Evelyn's oldest friends — a woman who had known the family for decades — slowly set down her fork.
