Chapter 2: The Table Was Set for Exactly Who Was Invited

Part 2 ⬇️
The dining room was perfectly set.
For exactly the people I had invited.
Every chair filled.
Every plate placed.
Every name card in its spot.
The table looked beautiful — because I had planned it that way, down to the last fork.
My mother-in-law spun around to face me.
"Where is everyone supposed to sit?"
"Right where they're sitting," I said calmly.
"There are twenty more people outside!"
"I know," I said.
"But I didn't invite them.
You did."
Her face went red.
"This is humiliating.
You did this on purpose."
My husband stepped forward.
"Mom, just—"
"Don't." I held up one hand.
"I asked you two days ago if you knew.
You said you figured she'd already talked to me." I looked at him steadily.
"She never talked to me."
The room had gone very quiet.
Then my mother-in-law said something I will never forget.
She looked at the guests already seated — my family, my friends — and said loudly, "This is exactly why my son should have married someone else."
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Except one person in the corner, who slowly stood up.
