Chapter 2: The Folder That Changed Everything

Part 2 ⬇️

The attorney's name was Carol Voss.

She had a corner office on the forty-first floor and a reputation for leaving opposing counsel in pieces.

She looked at my folder for eleven minutes without speaking.

Then she said, "Emily, this isn't a divorce file.

This is a prosecution."

I told her I wanted full custody, the condo Jason had inherited before we married, and a restraining order naming both Diane and Brooke.

Carol didn't blink.

"The medical report alone gets us the restraining order by Friday.

The rest—" she tapped the folder— "this changes the shape of everything."

My phone buzzed.

Jason.

Again.

I let it ring.

Then a text from a number I didn't recognize:

*Emily.

It's Aunt Ruth.

I was on Brooke's livestream last night.

I recorded the whole thing before she cut the feed.

Call me.*

I stared at the screen.

Brooke had pulled her phone under the table the moment I sl*pped Jason.

I had assumed she'd stopped the broadcast.

She hadn't stopped it in time.

Someone had been watching.

Someone had saved it.

Carol saw my expression.

"What just happened?"

I turned the phone toward her.

She read the message once.

Then she smiled for the first time since I'd walked in.

"Call her back," Carol said quietly.

"Right now."

My hand was shaking as I found the number.
