Chapter 2: Thirty-Eight Reasons

Part 2 ⬇️
The attorney's name was Carol Voss.
She had a reputation in Chicago family court that made opposing lawyers request continuances just to delay facing her.
She looked at my folder for eleven minutes without speaking.
Then she looked up.
"Thirty-eight exhibits.
Three years." She set her pen down.
"Mrs.
Bennett, most clients walk in here with a screenshot and a grudge.
You walked in with a case."
My phone buzzed on her desk.
Jason.
I declined it.
It buzzed again.
Then Brooke.
Then a number I didn't recognize.
"You should see this," Carol said, turning her laptop toward me.
Brooke's livestream had not disappeared.
Someone had clipped it before she pulled the phone down.
Forty seconds of footage.
Diane's hand.
Lily's head snapping sideways.
The room doing nothing.
It had been shared 14,000 times overnight.
The comments were not kind to the Bennett family.
Carol slid a legal pad across the desk.
"I need you to tell me one thing before we begin.
Is there anything they have on you?
Anything at all?"
I thought about it carefully.
"No," I said.
"But there's something I haven't told you yet.
Something Jason signed three months ago that he doesn't know I have a copy of."
Carol picked her pen back up.
"Then we're not just filing for divorce," she said quietly.
"We're filing for everything."
