Chapter 2: What Daniel Had Been Carrying Alone

Part 2 ⬇️
The room stayed frozen.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Evelyn's husband — Gerald — stood between us, his face completely white.
"Evelyn." His voice was barely a sound.
"Who is that man?"
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Daniel finally uncrossed his arms.
He took one step toward me — then stopped, like he didn't know which direction was safe anymore.
"Play it again," Gerald said.
"Gerald, I can explain—"
"Play it again." He looked at me.
Not at her.
At me.
I pressed play a second time.
The room heard everything.
Her voice, soft and certain, making plans with someone who was not her husband.
A name.
A date.
An amount of money.
That last part made Gerald go still in a way that frightened me.
Because the amount she'd promised that man — it was exactly what she'd accused me of stealing.
Gerald turned to his wife slowly.
"You set her up."
Evelyn's face collapsed.
And that was when Daniel finally spoke — not to me, not to his mother, but to his father.
"Dad.
There's something else you need to know."
He pulled out his own phone.
And I realized — Daniel had known something this whole time.
Something he'd been carrying alone.
---
What Daniel revealed next tore that family apart for good.
