Chapter 2: What She Left Behind in the Papers
The SUV moved through the storm in silence.
Claire sat in the back, barefoot, her heels on the seat beside her.
She didn't cry.
She watched the city lights blur through the rain and thought about the look on Ethan's face when she'd said Brooke's name out loud.
He hadn't denied it.
That told her everything she still needed to know.
Her phone buzzed again.
Not Daniel this time.
Ethan.
She stared at his name on the screen for three full seconds.
Then she turned the phone face-down.
Back at the Harrington estate, the mood had already shifted.
Margaret was on her own phone, pacing in front of the fireplace.
Brooke sat very still on the sofa, the signed divorce papers open in her lap.
Something in the wording had caught her eye.
"Margaret."
"Not now."
"Margaret." Brooke's voice was different this time.
Quiet.
Careful.
"What is Whitmore Global?"
The pacing stopped.
Ethan looked up from his whiskey glass.
Brooke turned the final page slowly and pointed to a single line near the bottom — a clause none of them had noticed before Claire signed.
Margaret crossed the room and read it.
The color left her face.
"That's not possible," she whispered.
Ethan took the papers from Brooke's hands.
He read the line twice.
Then he looked toward the window where Claire's SUV had been.
It was already gone.
What that clause revealed changed everything — and Margaret knew it the moment she read it.
