Chapter 2: The List on the Table

Part 2 ⬇️

I called Linda that morning.

She picked up on the second ring, cheerful as anything.

"Dinner tomorrow?

Oh, how lovely.

Your mother is so sweet."

I almost couldn't speak.

When we arrived the next evening, my mom had the table set beautifully.

Candles.

Her good dishes.

She hugged Linda at the door like an old friend.

I watched the whole thing from across the room, completely lost.

We sat down.

My mom poured the wine.

She asked Linda about the wedding, about the flowers, about the drive home.

Linda was glowing.

She loved the attention.

Then my mom set down her glass, folded her hands on the table, and smiled.

"Linda, I want to talk about the envelopes."

The smile on Linda's face didn't disappear.

It just…

froze.

"I counted what was in that card box before the reception.

I have the list right here."

She slid a piece of paper across the table.

"I'd like to go through it with you.

Together.

Tonight."

Linda looked at the paper.

Then at my mom.

Then at me.

She opened her mouth.

And that's when my husband walked in through the back door — and he wasn't alone.
