Chapter 1: She Shouldn't Have Fallen Asleep That Night
My mother-in-law came to stay with us for a week, and by the second day she was already acting like our house belonged to her.
She kept saying things like, "I've raised children before.
You two worry too much." Every time I reminded her to ask before making decisions about our eight-year-old daughter, she'd smile and reply, "Relax, I'm only trying to help." I had a bad feeling, but my husband insisted, "Just a few more days.
Let's not turn this into a fight."
One afternoon my husband was at work, and I ran to the grocery store for less than an hour.
When I got home, I found my daughter seated on the couch with tears streaming down her face, trying to cover her head with a blanket.
My heart sank the second I moved it aside.
Her beautiful long hair had been chopped into an uneven bob, with strands sticking out everywhere.
I turned toward my mother-in-law and asked, "Please tell me you didn't do this." She didn't even look guilty.
She shrugged and said, "She needed a haircut anyway.
You were taking forever to do it, so I handled it myself." My daughter hugged me tightly and whispered, "Grandma said you'd thank her later."
When my husband came home that evening, he was just as shocked as I was.
"Mom, what were you thinking?" he asked.
She rolled her eyes and laughed.
"Honestly, both of you are acting like I shaved her head.
It'll grow back." She refused to apologize and spent the rest of the evening acting as if we were the unreasonable ones.
Later that night, she said she was tired, wished everyone goodnight, and went to the guest room.
My husband fell asleep soon after, completely exhausted from work, but I couldn't close my eyes.
Every time I glanced at my daughter sleeping peacefully in her room, all I could think about was how betrayed she had felt.
I waited until the entire house was silent.
Then I quietly walked down the hallway, slowly opened the guest room door...
and stepped inside.
