Chapter 2: The Voice in the Hallway

Everyone in that room froze.

Daniel was on his feet, his face white, eyes locked on the screen.

"Sarah.

I'm warning you.

Turn it off."

"Sit down, Daniel."

He didn't sit down.

He stepped toward me.

That was when Evelyn's sister Margaret stood up from the far end of the table and said quietly, "Let her play it."

Evelyn spun around.

"Stay out of this."

"I've stayed out of it long enough."

On the screen, the timestamp read three hours before dinner.

Evelyn was in the kitchen alone.

She opened the small jar.

She moved slowly, deliberately, like someone who had done this before.

But it wasn't the footage of Evelyn that made Daniel panic.

It was the voice on the recording.

His voice.

Calling her from the hallway.

"Did you do it yet?"

The room went completely still.

Daniel's mother didn't answer him on the recording.

She just smiled.

I looked at my husband.

He couldn't meet my eyes.

"How long?" I asked him.

My voice didn't shake.

I was surprised by that.

He said nothing.

Then little Tyler, Sophie's cousin, pulled on my sleeve and held up his small tablet.

"Aunt Sarah…

I recorded something too.

From the hallway.

Because Grandma scared me."

What Tyler captured on that tablet exposed something far darker than anyone in that room was prepared for.
