Chapter 2: The Night Before — What the Camera Saw

Everyone in that room froze.

Daniel was on his feet, his face white as paper.

"Sarah, I'm warning you.

Turn it off."

"Sit down, Daniel."

On the screen, the timestamp read the night before Evelyn's birthday dinner.

The kitchen.

Evelyn standing at the counter.

And Daniel beside her.

Not visiting.

Not passing through.

Standing there, watching, while Evelyn opened a jar of peanut butter and held a small spoon over Sophie's dessert dish.

Daniel said nothing on that video.

He didn't stop her.

He just turned and walked out of the kitchen.

Someone at the table let out a sharp breath.

Evelyn's sister stood up and covered her mouth.

"Daniel." My voice was steady.

"You knew."

"It wasn't like that—"

"You watched her do it and you said nothing."

He reached for my arm.

"Sophie wasn't supposed to get seriously hurt.

Mom said it would just be a small reaction.

Enough to make you look paranoid.

Enough to—"

He stopped himself.

The room went completely still.

Evelyn's sister sat back down slowly.

Even Evelyn said nothing.

Because Daniel had just told everyone exactly what the plan had been.

I looked at my husband — this man I had trusted with my daughter's life — and I felt nothing but cold clarity.

I picked up my phone.

"I already sent this footage to someone else before I walked in here."

Daniel's eyes dropped to the floor.

That was when the front door opened.
