Chapter 2: What the Bracelet Remembered

Victoria's hand shot to her phone.
I crossed the room in three steps and took it from her fingers before she could dial.
"You wouldn't," she said.
Her voice was still steady.
Still the woman who had run boardrooms and dismissed people like furniture.
"I already did," I said.
Julian backed toward the corridor.
Two men in dark coats stepped into the doorway.
He stopped.
Victoria looked at them, then back at me.
For the first time, the certainty left her face.
"You have no proof of anything," she said.
"Elena was upset.
She went outside.
That's all this was."
I reached into my coat and placed a small device on the counter between us.
A recording.
Her voice.
Chloe's voice.
The sound of Elena hitting the floor.
Victoria went white.
"Where did you—"
"The bracelet," I said.
"Audio and location.
Twelve hours of it."
Julian made a sound I had never heard from a grown man.
Chloe hadn't arrived yet.
She didn't know what was waiting for her.
Then Elena's doctor stepped out of the treatment room.
He looked at me, not at them.
"Mr.
Vance," he said carefully.
"There's something on the scan we need to discuss privately."
The room went silent.
Whatever he had found — Victoria didn't know about it either.
I could tell by the way her eyes moved.
Calculating.
Afraid.
