Chapter 2: What She Pulled From Her Pocket

My husband's voice came out low and steady, which was somehow worse than shouting.
"Which baby did you switch her with?"
My mother-in-law pressed herself against the wall.
"I didn't switch anyone.
I only looked at the band."
"You lunged for the bassinet the moment the nurse picked up the scanner." He stepped closer.
"Which one did you touch?"
She said nothing.
The nurse was already moving.
She scanned the second baby — still in the bassinet — and checked the number against her tablet.
Her hand stopped moving.
She looked up at the charge nurse in the doorway.
A look passed between them that made my stomach drop.
"We need to verify both bands against the delivery record."
My mother-in-law suddenly found her voice.
"This is ridiculous.
I'm her grandmother.
I would never —"
"Mom." My husband cut her off.
"Stop talking."
Our son was still standing beside the bassinet.
He hadn't moved since he pointed at the band.
He was staring at his grandmother with an expression no six-year-old should have to wear.
Then my sister-in-law — who had been silent in the corner this entire time — slowly reached into her coat pocket.
And pulled out a hospital bracelet.
