Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

Part 2 ⬇️
The officer held up the folder and looked straight at Mason.
"Would you like to explain what you were doing with this?"
Mason's face went white.
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
My mother was still screaming from the driveway.
"That house is mine!
I raised him!
Everything he has came from me!"
One of the officers turned to me quietly.
"Sir, there are two documents in here.
One is your original deed.
The other appears to be a transfer of ownership — already signed."
I felt the ground shift under me.
"Signed by who?" I asked.
He hesitated.
"It has your signature on it, Mr.
Bradley."
I had never signed anything.
Amy grabbed my arm.
Her hand was shaking.
I looked at Mason.
He finally spoke, his voice low and flat.
"You were never supposed to come home early."
That was all he said.
My aunt Betsy had already disappeared back inside.
Two other relatives were quietly gathering their bags near the side door.
Then one of the officers called out from the hallway.
"Sir — there's something else in here you need to see."
He was holding a second envelope.
My name was written on the front in my mother's handwriting.
But the postmark was from eight months ago.
I had never received it.
