Chapter 2: The Second Signature

Part 2 — continued from the comments 👇

The officer held up the folder and looked directly at my mother.

"Ma'am, whose signature is on this transfer document?"

Teresa didn't answer.

She just stared at Mason.

Mason's face went white.

That was when I noticed something the police hadn't seen yet.

Tucked behind the deed was a second document — a bank authorization form.

My name was at the top.

But the signature wasn't mine.

"Where did this come from?" I asked.

Mason took a step back.

"Connor, listen to me.

It wasn't supposed to go this far—"

"Whose signature is that?" I said again.

He looked at Teresa.

She looked away.

The officer took the folder from my hands and called for backup.

As they walked Mason toward the patrol car, he turned around one last time.

"Ask your mother how long she's been planning this," he said.

"Ask her what she did with the money before Frederick was even born."

I turned to Teresa.

She was still in handcuffs.

Still furious.

But for the first time all evening, she said nothing.

And that silence told me everything.

Whatever Mason knew — it was worse than a stolen deed.
