Chapter 2: The Envelope

Part 2 ⬇️
I should have closed the door.
Every part of me knew that.
But my feet wouldn't move.
She brought her arm forward slowly.
In her hand was a manila envelope, thick and worn at the edges, like it had been carried for a long time.
"What is that?" I asked.
"Documents," she said.
"About the night they took you."
My chest tightened.
"I know what happened that night.
You left me."
"No." Her voice cracked.
"I was taken too."
I stared at her.
"That's not what the records say."
She held the envelope out.
"The records were wrong.
Someone made sure of that."
I didn't take it.
I couldn't.
"You had twenty years," I said.
"Twenty years to find me.
To call.
To send a single letter."
Her eyes filled.
"I know.
And I have no right to ask you for anything."
"Then why are you here?"
She looked down at the envelope, then back at me.
"Because the person who separated us is about to take something from you again.
Something you built.
And this time—" her voice dropped— "they have the legal paperwork to do it."
The porch light flickered.
Behind her, a car I hadn't noticed before sat idling at the curb.
Engine running.
Lights off.
Someone was waiting.
