Chapter 2: The Account That Wasn't the Only One

I pressed send.

The message delivered instantly.

No taking it back.

For a few seconds, nothing happened.

Margaret was still talking.

I could hear her voice through the phone, distant now, like noise from another room.

Then the notifications started.

One.

Three.

Seven.

Aunt Carol was first.

"Olivia…

is this real?"

Then Uncle James.

"What is this document?

Someone explain."

Then Grandma.

Just two words: "Oh, Margaret."

Margaret went quiet mid-sentence.

"What did you just do?" she whispered.

"I shared a bank document," I said.

"The one with my name on it."

"You had no right—"

"It was my account, Mom."

Ryan called in less than a minute.

He didn't say hello.

"Are you out of your mind?

You don't air family business like this."

"You mean I shouldn't have shown them the savings account opened for me that I never knew existed?"

"That money kept this family together."

"It was supposed to keep me in school, Ryan."

He went silent.

Then, quietly, he said something I hadn't expected.

"There's more to this than you know, Liv.

That account…

it wasn't the only one."

I stopped breathing.

"What do you mean it wasn't the only one?"

He didn't answer.

The call ended.

I stared at my phone.

The group chat was still filling with messages.

But all I could think about was what Ryan had just said.

*It wasn't the only one.*
