Chapter 2: Every Dollar Matters

PART 2 ⬇️
She said, "I need you to trust me.
I can't explain yet.
But every dollar matters right now."
I felt the air leave my chest.
"Mom.
Are you sick?"
Silence.
Not the kind where someone is thinking.
The kind where someone already knows the answer and doesn't want to say it out loud.
"Mom."
"I didn't want to worry you."
My hands were shaking.
"How long have you known?"
"A few months."
A few months.
She had been quietly collecting $40 from me — cash, exact change, every single time — for months.
And not once did she say a word.
"Why didn't you just tell me?"
"Because you would have tried to fix it.
And this isn't something you can fix."
I didn't know whether to cry or be angry.
I was both.
Then she said something that stopped me completely.
"The money isn't for me."
I went still.
"Then who is it for?"
She hesitated.
I heard her breathing on the other end of the line.
"There's something I should have told you a long time ago.
About Caleb."
The room felt like it tilted.
"What about Caleb?"
She didn't answer right away.
And in that silence, I realized I had no idea what I was about to hear.

What Mom revealed next about Caleb left me unable to speak.
