Chapter 2: The Envelope in the Drawer

Part 2 ⬇️
She didn't answer right away.
She just looked at me for a long moment, and something in her face changed.
Not guilty.
Not defensive.
Something closer to exhausted.
"Mom.
What's going on?"
She sat down at the kitchen table and folded her hands.
"I need you to promise me you won't panic."
That made everything worse.
"Why would I panic?"
She didn't answer that either.
She got up, walked to the small drawer beside the refrigerator — the one she's always used for takeout menus and rubber bands — and pulled out an envelope.
She set it on the table in front of me.
I recognized the logo in the corner immediately.
It was from a medical office.
My hands went cold.
"Mom—"
"I've been going to appointments," she said quietly.
"For a few months now.
I didn't want to worry you until I knew more."
"Knew more about what?"
She tapped the envelope but didn't open it.
"There's a procedure they want me to have.
It's not optional anymore.
And it isn't cheap."
I stared at her.
"You've been saving the $40."
She nodded once.
"Every single time."
I couldn't speak.
I just sat there thinking about every moment I'd felt resentful.
Every time I'd complained to my husband.
Every time I'd called an actual babysitter just to make a point.
Then she said something that completely broke me.
"I didn't want Caleb to notice anything was wrong.
So I kept having him come over.
I just needed the money to be real."
