Chapter 2: The Woman in the Doorway

The nurse stepped back.

And then I saw her.

A woman stood in the doorway holding a bouquet of white flowers.

Late thirties.

Composed.

Like she had every right to be there.

Daniel's face went white.

"Rebecca."

The name landed in the room like something thrown hard.

I looked at my husband.

"That's her?

She's *here*?"

Rebecca didn't move.

Her eyes went straight to the baby in Daniel's arms.

"Margaret called me," she said quietly.

"She said you'd want me here."

"I never said that," Daniel said.

"She said it was what you both wanted."

"She lied."

Margaret stepped forward.

"Daniel, Rebecca was part of this family for six years.

She deserved to—"

"She deserved nothing from this room." His voice was low.

Controlled.

Worse than shouting.

I couldn't speak.

I had just given birth hours ago.

I was still in that bed.

And my mother-in-law had invited my husband's ex-wife to meet our daughter before I even knew her name.

Rebecca looked at me for the first time.

"I'm sorry.

I didn't know the full situation."

"Then you should leave," I said.

She nodded.

Turned to go.

But then she stopped.

She reached into her bag and placed something on the table near the door.

A photograph.

Daniel saw it first.

His expression collapsed.

"Where did you get that?"

Rebecca looked at Margaret.

And Margaret said nothing.

What's in that photograph — and what has Margaret been hiding all along?

The truth is darker than anyone in that room expected.
