Chapter 2: You Don't Know What You've Just Started

"You had no right!" Beatrice screamed, her voice shaking the walls.

My kids looked up from the bed, wide-eyed and frightened.

I stepped outside and pulled the door shut behind me.

"Lower your voice," I said quietly.

"My children are in there."

"Don't tell me what to do!" she snapped.

"What you did was completely out of line.

You had no right to go behind my back like that!"

I looked at her calmly.

"I simply called the front desk," I said.

"I explained that the suite had been booked under my name, for my anniversary, and that there had been a mistake at check-in."

Her face went a deeper shade of red.

"That suite was mine.

David agreed—"

"David booked it for me," I said.

"My name is on the reservation.

I have the confirmation email."

She opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

For the first time all day, Beatrice had nothing to say.

Then her phone buzzed.

She glanced at the screen — and something shifted in her expression.

Not anger anymore.

Something closer to panic.

She looked back at me, her voice dropping to almost a whisper.

"You don't know what you've just started."
