Chapter 1: The Door That Was No Longer There

My MIL took our bedroom door off its hinges while staying at our house and said, "My son has no secrets from me"—that night, my husband did something that made her scream and turn red.

My MIL, Grace, was supposed to stay with us for ten days.

A pipe had burst in her apartment, and my husband, Harold, offered her our guest room while repairs were finished.

By the second day, I was counting the hours until she left.

Grace didn't knock.

She stepped into our bedroom while I was changing because she "needed a charger," opened Harold's desk drawers looking for stamps, and once picked up my birth control from the nightstand.

"Oh, don't look so horrified," she laughed.

"I've known my son longer than you have."

Harold told her twice that our bedroom was private.

Grace rolled her eyes.

"Private from strangers, maybe.

I'm his mother."

The worst happened on Friday.

I came home from work and stopped halfway down the hallway.

Our bedroom had no door.

It was leaning against the wall.

The hinges, screws, and doorknob were arranged neatly on the carpet, and Grace was standing inside our room folding Harold's shirts.

For a second, I genuinely couldn't speak.

"What did you do?"

She didn't even turn around.

"You two keep closing yourselves in here like teenagers.

It's ridiculous."

"You took our door off?" She finally looked at me.

"My son has no secrets from me."

I felt my face burn.

"This is my bedroom too."

"And this is my son's house."

Actually, Harold and I had bought it together.

But before I could answer, the front door opened.

Harold walked down the hall, loosened his tie, and froze.

He looked at the empty doorway.

Then at the door leaning against the wall.

Then at his mother.

"Mom."

Grace smiled as if she'd done us a favor.

"Much better, isn't it?

A family shouldn't need all these barriers."

I expected him to explode.

Instead, he took my hand and quietly led me downstairs.

"Don't panic," he whispered.

"I'll teach her a lesson."

I stared at him.

"What are you going to do?"

A strange little smile crossed his face.

"Nothing yet.

Just wait until tonight."

That evening, Grace went to the guest room around ten.

Harold waited another hour.

Then he quietly put on his bathrobe and disappeared upstairs.

A few minutes later, I heard Grace screaming.

"HAROLD!"

I raced upstairs.

She stood in the hallway, her face turning scarlet with rage.

Harold stood opposite her, perfectly calm, holding just one thing in his hand.

And when I saw what he'd done while she was sleeping, I had to cover my mouth.
