Chapter 2: The Letters She Never Delivered

The guest was a man I had never seen before.

But Martha clearly had.

She knocked over her chair getting up.

Her face went completely white.

She was shaking.

Nick held the microphone steady and said:

"Everyone, this is my father."

The room went silent.

Martha had told Nick — told everyone — that his father had walked out on them when Nick was three years old.

That he was a selfish man who wanted nothing to do with his son.

But the man standing in that doorway didn't look like someone who had abandoned anything.

He looked like a man who had been kept away.

Nick turned to face his mother directly.

"Dad has been trying to contact me for eleven years, Mom.

Eleven years.

You told me he never reached out.

Not once."

Martha opened her mouth.

"Nick, I was protecting you—"

"From what?

From having a father?"

His voice didn't rise.

It didn't need to.

Nick reached into his jacket pocket and placed something on the table in front of her.

A stack of envelopes.

Held together with a rubber band.

Every single one had been opened.

Martha stared at them and said nothing.

Then his father spoke for the first time.

His voice was quiet.

Steady.

"I never stopped writing, son."

I watched Martha's hands begin to tremble.

And I realized — the hair was never the real attack.

This was.

What Martha had hidden from Nick for over a decade was only part of the truth.
