Chapter 2: Every Receipt

**— PART 2 —**

Inside the container was every receipt.

Every grocery bill.

Every catering cost.

Every single expense from every holiday party I had hosted at our house for the past four years.

Printed.

Totaled.

Highlighted.

Linda stared at the papers.

Her smile was completely gone.

"What is this?" she said quietly.

"That's your share," I said.

"Since you've been eating at our table for four years without bringing a single dish, I thought you'd want to know what that's worth.

I've done the math.

It's all there."

Jessica grabbed her mother's arm.

Nicole took a step back.

Linda's face went red.

"You've been keeping RECORDS on me?

On your own family?"

"I've been keeping records on someone who just packed every dish off my husband's birthday table while calling me stingy."

The backyard went quiet.

The guests had stopped pretending not to listen.

Then my husband finally stood up.

And what he said next — I did not expect it.

Not from him.

Not after everything I had done to keep the peace.

He looked at his mother, then looked at me, and said something that made two of our guests put down their drinks and stare.

What did her husband say in that moment?
