Chapter 2: You Wanted Everything to Be Perfect

The officer spoke quietly, but I heard every word.
Clara's husband — the man she'd spent 40 years with, the man whose anniversary party this was — had filed a fraud report against her.
That morning.
Apparently, Clara had been secretly moving money out of their joint accounts for over two years.
Large amounts.
Into an account her husband knew nothing about.
And the timing?
She had planned this party herself.
Invited everyone.
Made it a big event.
Her husband's lawyer had advised him to let the party happen — so the police could serve her the papers in front of witnesses.
Clara stood in the middle of that elegant restaurant, in her expensive gown, surrounded by every person she'd ever wanted to impress — and she couldn't say a single word.
I watched her look around the room for support.
No one moved.
Then her husband walked up to her, calm as I'd ever seen him, and said:
"You wanted everything to be perfect tonight, Clara.
Well.
It is."
She grabbed his arm and whispered something I couldn't fully hear — but I caught one word.
His name.
And the way she said it told me this wasn't just about money.
There was something else.
Something older.
Something she had been hiding long before the accounts.
My husband went pale when he heard what the officer said next.
