Chapter 2: The Room She Always Kept Locked

I sat down.

Ethan didn't look at me right away.

He just stared at the table like he was trying to find the right words.

"When I moved the dresser," he said slowly, "I found a room."

"A room?"

"A spare room.

The one she always keeps locked."

My chest went cold.

"It was open today.

The door was just…

open."

He finally looked at me.

"Your clothes are in there.

All of them.

Hanging up.

Organized by color.

The navy dress.

The brown boots.

The cream cardigan."

I couldn't speak.

"The green coat was on a hook by the door."

"Ethan—"

"That's not the worst part."

He reached into his jacket pocket and placed something on the table between us.

A photograph.

A woman I didn't recognize was wearing my green coat.

She was standing in what looked like Marlene's backyard, smiling at the camera.

"Who is that?"

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Mom said it was nobody.

Just a friend."

"A friend wearing my coat?"

He didn't answer.

"Ethan.

Who is she?"

He pushed back from the table and walked to the window.

"She said her name was Diane."

The name meant nothing to me.

But the look on Ethan's face told me it meant everything to him.

What Ethan said next about Diane stopped me cold.
