Chapter 2: The Loudest Silence

Mitchell cleared his throat.
"The house…
is in Audrey's name."
The silence that followed was the loudest thing I had ever heard.
Vivian's mouth opened.
Then closed.
Then opened again.
"What did you just say?"
Officer Callahan turned to me.
"Ma'am, can you confirm you are the sole owner of this property?"
"Yes.
I purchased it before we were married.
My name is on the deed."
Mallory stopped recording.
For the first time all afternoon, she had nothing to say.
Vivian turned on Mitchell like he had personally betrayed her.
"You told me this was your house."
"I never said that exactly—"
"You let me believe it.
For years."
Officer Callahan stepped forward calmly.
"Ma'am, if you've never resided here and your name is not on the deed, I can't compel the homeowner to allow entry.
That's not how this works."
Vivian's face went red.
"She's keeping a mother from her son's home."
"It's not his home to offer," the officer said quietly.
Mallory grabbed her mother's arm.
But Vivian wasn't finished.
She pointed a finger directly at me and said something I will never forget.
Something that told me this wasn't really about a spare room.
It never had been.
