Chapter 1: The Day She Smiled at the Broken Pieces

My MIL "accidentally" smashed the tea set my late mother had given me, and I didn't say a word — but that evening, I showed up at her house carrying one box, and the moment she saw what was inside, she stepped back and whispered, "You wouldn't."

My mother was the only family I had left.

She passed away last year after a short illness.

Just days before my birthday, she gave me a beautiful porcelain tea set.

"I want you to have something of mine for years," she said.

It became one of my most precious possessions.

On the first anniversary of Mom's passing, I invited a few relatives over for dinner so we could remember her together.

Afterward, I brought out her tea set.

My MIL immediately rolled her eyes.

"You still treat those cups like they're made of gold."

When she reached for the tray, I stopped her.

"I'll take it."

"Oh, relax," she said.

"I'm not going to break your precious dishes."

A minute later, I heard a crash.

I turned around.

Every cup was on the floor.

The teapot had shattered.

My MIL stood over the pieces with an exaggerated look of surprise.

"Oops."

But I had seen the way she nudged the tray too close to the edge.

And the tiny smile on her face vanished the moment she realized I was watching.

Then she shrugged.

"They're just cups.

Go to a store and buy another set.

What's the problem?"

My husband snapped at her, but I said nothing.

I quietly gathered every broken piece.

That evening, I drove to my MIL's house carrying a box.

She opened the door and smirked.

"What, bringing me your broken dishes?"

I set the box on her table and opened it.

The color drained from her face.

She stepped back.

"You wouldn't."

I looked at her.

"Actually, I already did."
