Chapter 2: He Made Me Promise

Part 2 ⬇️
The room went completely still.
My husband sat back down.
I don't think he even realized he'd done it.
Theo's hands were shaking on the podium.
But his voice, when it came, was steadier than I expected.
"Jack asked me to wear this."
I heard someone behind me gasp.
"He asked me three weeks before he passed.
He said — Theo, I need you to do something for me at my funeral.
And I need you to promise before I tell you what it is."
Theo stopped again.
He pressed his lips together.
"So I promised.
And then he told me."
My husband reached over and took my hand.
I didn't even look at him.
I couldn't take my eyes off Theo.
"Jack said — I've been keeping something from my parents my whole life.
Something important.
And I'm not brave enough to tell them myself.
But I can't leave without them knowing."
The silence in that room was unlike anything I've ever felt.
"He made me promise to stand up here, in front of everyone, so I couldn't back out.
So neither of us could."
Theo looked directly at me then.
"He loved you.
He wanted you to know that first.
May you like
Before anything else."
And then he said the one thing none of us saw coming.
