Chapter 2: The Recording Under the Pillow

Three days later, the hospital room door swung open.
Luke walked in first, Celina right behind him, both wearing the same smug, satisfied expressions they'd had while eating cake over my screams.
"Oh, look at you," Celina said, eyes sweeping over my elevated leg, my IV line, my pale face.
"Lying there like a queen.
All this drama over a little fall."
"A little fall," I repeated quietly.
Luke pulled up a chair without being invited.
"The doctor says you'll need six weeks of recovery.
Perfect timing, actually.
You can use it to think about how you've been treating my family."
I didn't answer.
I just reached under my pillow.
Celina laughed.
"What's that?
A diary?
Going to cry into your little notebook?"
I pressed play.
Luke's voice filled the room.
*"Tomorrow we'll tell everyone she fell down the stairs.
After this, she'll have to quit her job and stay home.
Then, we can finally control her."*
The color drained from his face.
Then my lawyer stepped out from behind the privacy curtain.
And that was the moment Luke noticed the two police officers standing just outside the open door.
"Clover—" he started.
"Don't," I said.
"They already found the house."

What they found inside that house was something even I wasn't fully prepared for.
