Chapter 2: One Little Detail

— PART 2 —

Lily's voice was small but perfectly clear.

"Daddy didn't raise us.

Mommy did.

Daddy was never home."

No one moved.

Then Lily pointed straight at me across the auditorium and said, "She's the one who should have that award."

The applause was gone.

Every phone lowered.

The principal stood frozen at the side of the stage.

Richard leaned down and grabbed Lily's arm — not hard, but fast.

He whispered something through his smile.

Lily pulled away.

"I'm not lying, Daddy.

You told us to always tell the truth at school."

A few people in the crowd turned to look at me.

I hadn't moved.

I couldn't.

Then our oldest, sixteen-year-old Daniel, stood up from his seat in the front row.

He didn't say a word.

He just walked up the side steps onto the stage and stood next to Lily.

Then our second oldest followed.

Then the third.

One by one, all five older children moved to stand beside their little sister.

Richard straightened up.

His jaw was tight.

His smile was completely gone now.

The principal stepped toward the microphone — but before she reached it, Daniel pulled something from his jacket pocket.

A folded piece of paper.

He looked at his father.

Then he looked at the principal.

"We'd like to read something," he said quietly.

"All of us wrote it together."

Richard's face went white.

What Daniel read from that paper left the entire auditorium speechless — and Richard had no answer for any of it.
